Darren Skewes combines menacingly dark, sonorous vocals and crunchy guitar riffs with a deep-fried southern twang over the top of Junior Danger’s rock solid rhythm section of Tom Meyer and Damien Brown, making this a bewitching mix of hellpunk, and country-flecked doom rock, with the emotionally density of The Doors combined with The Misfits.
AC/DC-flecked riffs pop up here and there, notably on Aberdeen, and if Leonard Cohen had ever written a slave chant-whilst-sailing-the-River Styx-to-Hades, it would have sounded exactly like Dig. No Comfort rolls with a jaunty swing, while Mariana brings the boogie.
The debut album from this Brisbane trio, it signposts an exciting time in Australian rock n’ roll, and we’ll be keen to hear what these guys do next.
