Yomi Ship navigate some enthralling seas on this self-titled debut EP, cut in one take with no overdubs because guitarist Jarred Osborne prefers to keep the sound fresh – and he has an impressive enough effects rack and playing skills to make it work.
Backed by drummer brother Nick and bass player Jade Champion, the good ship Yomi never cast adrift, always nailing their progressive, captivating course perfectly.
Opener The Hidden Room Of Tenome is full of lightly jazzy licks, Seamonkey weaves waves of percussion and guitar together as they wash over us through progressive time changes and mood swings. Yawn is perhaps the most dynamically rocking track here, and anything but boring or sleepy.
It’s testament to the young trio’s bravery and experimental nature that these totally instrumental songs create such cinematic feelings and emotion in the listener.
Passage To Yomi Parts 1 and 2 are the true epics here, a musical tour de force that, stylistically, darts this way and that – a true journey – through avant-jazz, Middle Eastern flavours, tribal rhythms and dream-state near-funk grooves. It’s intoxicating, and a trip well worth taking, preferably with the lights off and your focus 100% on the music.
Yomi Shop: outré, and essential.
