One of R&B’s best and brightest hit Detroit last week to help kick off Memorial Day weekend. Brian McKnight had them packed in all over the main floor. first level, and most of the balcony when he took to the stage at Motor City’s Sound Board Theater. As he ran through tracks from his latest and his catalog, he wowed the crowd, but more importantly wooed the women. He knew his audience and played to them this evening. Early proof was evident when he brought a fan, Tiffany, to the stage and sang to her after delivering what appeared to be a dozen beautiful roses. Her night was made more complete as she rose from the stool and “danced” with McKnight to finish off the track. There was more than one woman in the audience this evening that wished she were Tiffany. Even sound issues couldn’t stop Brian from taking the crowd away from their real life and giving them a much needed break from reality. He made light of it and with the help of his band leader/bassist, the show was quickly back on track. McKnight’s voice was sexy and subtle when needed and as powerful as ever when he turned it up a notch. It was a pleasure watching his strum his guitar in the middle of the set while he sang his heart out to everyone that would listen. The acoustics of the venue really allowed the lush and full from the front to the back and all the way up top. The stage, while kept simple, flourished with lights allowing every move McKnight to be seen by everyone in the venue. Utilizing only his voice, small band, acoustic guitar, and no elaborate stage show, Brian took over and gave this crowd exactly what they came to see. If you get the chance, I recommend getting out to see one of the better stripped down performances I have seen in a while.
