Big Pete Oxley makes his musical return to hometown Kingscliff this June for the first time since the Sunnyboys farewell tour of 1984.
Of course Peter, alongside fellow Sunnyboy and brother Jeremy Oxley, spent his formative years in Kingscliff surfing and playing in bands Jerry & The Jets, Golden Syrup, Wooden Horse and Four Play; the later also featuring Michael Charles (another Kingscliff native) who would later appear alongside Pete in Sydney band Shy Impostors, while Wooden Horse featured both Jeremy and Peter plus future Sunnyboys drummer Bil Bilson though, none of those early Sunnyboys classics were ever played by that band.
This time however, Peter returns with his new band The Aints! featuring Ed Kuepper of The Saints a band he had barely heard of when he left Kingscliff for Sydney at the end of 1978. The Aints! also feature Paul Larsen Loughhead of The Celibate Rifles / The New Christs infamy as well as Sunnyboys touring keyboard player Alister Spence and trumpet master Eamon Diliworth leading a three-piece brass section.
The Aints! will be promoting their brand new 5-track mini-LP/CD 5-6-7-8-9 (ABC Music) as well as a live album The Aints! Play The Saints (’73-’78).
Recorded across shows in Sydney & Brisbane during their 2017-2018 tours ‘Play The Saints’ does exactly that, rekindling the energy of the original band lead by Kuepper across their seminal first three albums (I’m) Stranded, Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds.
“Kuepper’s razor-wire guitar is mixed up high here and underpins its attack. Of course the show-stopping closers, the intense “Nights in Venice” and “River Deep, Mountain High”, put a lid on things on the live album, just as they do in the flesh.” – i94bar.com
‘Play The Saints’ will be just the second ever release for the Fatal label, the first being The Saints 7” (I’m) Stranded back in June 1976 helping kick start that whole punk thing. Catch The Aints! rendition of The Saints classic 7”
