Having just finished their recent sold out tour around North America, EU and the UK, The Last Dinner Party are set to tour Australia in the coming week – spotlighting their second studio album “From The Pyre”, the follow-up to “Prelude To Ecstasy”. TLDP began in Perth last night, with Sir Chloe as support, and their show exceeded already high expectations.

Sir Chloe

Sir Chloe started her 30 minute set with “July” and ended with her hit songs “Michelle” and “Too Close”. She demonstrated the art of balancing grace and attitude with a ‘cool girl’ presence on the stage. We heard a debut performance of the unreleased song “Company” complete with an impressive outro. Drummer Maya Stepansky put her heart and soul into the performance just as Chloe did – and it paid off.

Cue The Last Dinner Party starting their hour and 45 minute set on an amazingly ornate stage festooned with ethereal chiffon drapes which – combined by striking lighting – could only be described as cinematic. Opener “Agnus Dei” – the first track on the album – had an electric reaction immediately. All five band members received a standing ovation of song length filled with praise, cheers and claps before the second track “I Count The Ways” had even concluded. Throughout their entire set every lyric down to the breath taken beforehand was sung so raw and beautifully. Frontwoman and lead singer Abigail Morris filled the stage with elegant dance moves for the whole set and glances that could only be described as adoring towards her band members as they solo’d throughout the night. While all five other members contribute to backing vocals, they each also specialise in their own craft – Georgia Davis on Bass Guitar, Emily Robert’s on lead guitar, flute and mandolin, Lizzie Mayland on rhythm Guitar and flute and Aurora Nishevci on keyboard, piano, saxophone and synth and stand-in drummer Casper Miles.

All of the band members made sure to remind the audience how appreciated they were when they were on the microphone with the spotlight – making comments like “our songs feel complete when we see you singing them back to us” and friendly banter like “I can see some people singing and some people dancing… that’s very important – it’s a rock show!”.

Australian bass guitarist Georgia Davis greeted the audience early in the night very wholesomely with an acknowledgement to country – stating “we could learn a lot about aboriginal culture, especially how they view and value community” and how she is “beyond proud to be Australian”.

Their rendition of “The Feminine Urge” was particularly powerful and empowering to the vastly female-heavy crowd, Morris pointed to the audience while belting the chorus and as if there was an unspoken agreement, the line “do you feel like a man when I can’t talk back?” was not sung but screamed by every woman standing in the pit and highly likely the auditorium steps as well. It was an emotional yet invigorating moment of the night.

Pianist/keytarist Nishevci sang Gjuha in her family’s native Albanian, followed by a magnificent Rifle sung by guitarist Mayland.

During “My Lady Of Mercy” lead singer Morris jumped off the stage and stepped up onto the barricade of fans to sing mere centimetres from the audience while holding as many hands as possible. I was lucky enough to be right in front of her when this happened the first time. I can confirm it was epic.

Concluding their show with an encore of “This Is The Killer Speaking” and thanking everyone of their team from the production manager to the catering truck drivers by name, after teasing an abrupt “Okay, goodnight Perth” as their ending, left everyone in the auditorium completely content and undoubtedly thinking about this incredible performance for days.
