A Dirty Dozen with ‘JAY’ POOM EUARCHUKIATI of DEFYING DECAY – February 2019

The video is a visceral abstraction of a Metamorphosis, the transformation of matter to a hybrid consciousness.” We get singer Jay to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

I feel like the latest release we have is probably one of the heavier tracks on the record, the first time fan listen to the track they would probably think either they like it because it’s going back to our heavier roots like the first record. There are a few of those songs on the record with hidden meanings but however for “Judas Kiss” there’s nothing hidden in there.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I’ve always enjoyed music as a kid, I started singing when I was 3, Started playing Thai Xylophone when I was 6 then started playing guitar when I was 10. I realized if I could do this and make a living out of it, it will be a dream come true as I would enjoy working. As a kid every week I would save up my pocket money then spend it on one cassette in a record store then as I grew up all the money I made would or save up would 100% go into buying musical gears while my friends at school would spend it on games and stuff. The first time I ever performed in front of an audience is when I was 6 years old I had to sing in front of the queen of Thailand for her majesty birthday and it was probably the best moment in my life back then.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

When I started out as mention earlier I played guitar when I was 10 because that’s when I really got into rock/metal music. One of the live shows/ concert I’ve been to which. Change my view in playing music was probably seeing the prodigy live. Before that I was always into metal/rock only or any bands that had a lot of guitars in it but after that show I thought it was really unique because of the lighting and the energy and the fact that they usage of more synths and electronics elements and I thought it sounded heavier than most bands guitar based band. So after that I started saving up for synth and studying synthesis and adding synth to live performance.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, Radiohead and Maroon 5.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Probably Imagine Dragons, mainly is because I really like their music and I know a lot of people would disagree with me on this one but it is the only band I feel like they are evolving rock music and stepping away form the traditional usage of guitars and using other interments instead and. That is something I always want to be able to achieve. Also it seems like at their show everyone could sing along to their songs in their concerts and that is a moment I dream of.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

It’s just Alternative Metal with a lot of Nu Metal influence because of the riffs and grooves uses of sampling and electronics but just with a lot of guitar solos still. Every song is difference in it’s own way as we can go from “Ghost” light to like “Judas Kiss” Heavy but still maintaining some memorable parts in the songs and catchy choruses . I usually don’t mind comparison that fans make I. Actually fine it quite fun to read because it just makes you see and know that our music is really not every ones cup of tea and the opinion could be vary but if there’s one that makes me personally cringe is someone said that we are like Eyes Set To Kill because personally I don’t think we sound close to them.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

I guess it’s different for everyone but for me is being able to travel around the world and play music.

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Usually we don’t cook our self that much because we couldn’t be bother to clean up we usually just order food or go out. However if were do it’s definitely Howard Fang our lead guitarist, I would be the one who bring the drinks in, Kongpop Jump Thongrat our other guitarist/pianist will be the first to blackout always. Then cracking out a acoustic guitar for a sing a long that we never actually done it as usually we will try to keep our interments away when we are drinking because there was once where we accidentally dropped one and snapped out the guitar neck lol.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

I randomly ran into Mike Shinoda in a restaurant last year. He was so nice and we talked for bit about music production.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I can’t really think because all I really enjoy is music, don’t really have other hobbies I’m into but I guess work for the MI6 since I grew up watching a lot of James Bond movies with my parents and it seems fun, even tho I doubt it will be like the actual movies in real life.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

I really wish I recorded the upcoming album Metamorphosis 20 years earlier and released it 20 years earlier, As I feel like back then rock/metal music was definitely bigger, in terms of if you went out today and ask teenagers at high school what they listen to now days it would probably be rap mostly but before it would have been rock. I feel like the early 00’s was the peak of the genres.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would have to say Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park because this record is what really started it all for me. It never gets old to me not just it only got me into rock/metal music and got me playing guitar when I was younger but it also got me into music production today because as Learn guitars to every song on. that record when I was younger after that I wanted to know how they did all the electronics part and how they recorded it to sound that great. I mean it was in 2000 how did they get or made all those vocal effects, that record to me is just timeless and it made me who I am today.
