A Dirty Dozen with KIBBY – May 2024
According to a recent press release: “NYC- based grungy rock outfit Kibby started as an idea in late 2018 in Queens, NY. The concept for Kibby had one clear goal… to release one album a year for 10 years straight. Kibby has stayed on his path, now set to release his 5th album Whatever Happened To Honor to be released in August of 2024. Leading the new album is “Get Me To the Dentist,” due out June 7,2024, “a doom and gloom, heavy hitter about the fear of death. Tongue fully in cheek for this one with lyrics about being exhausted by the idea of having to wait to get old and die.” Alongside the song release, Kibby will be playing a special release show on June 7th at Gold Sounds in Brooklyn, NY.” We get Kibby to discuss new music, influences, and more.
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
The new album is called Whatever Happened To Honor. It was written and recorded over the summer of 2023.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
7 year-old me pretending to be Elvis. That’s how it started.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
Once I got a little older I got really into Aerosmith so I needed to learn how to play guitar. But I wasn’t good enough to play those riffs so I had to learn Nirvana songs instead.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Iggy Pop. I think his voice would sound crazy and cool on a Kibby song.
5. What is your favorite activity when out of the studio and/or not on tour? What do you like to do to unwind?
I just like to sleep a lot. I don’t get enough of it.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
I guess like moody garage rock. I’m never really bothered by any comparisons. I like that people hear different things in the music.
7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
No one cooks and no one sings and we all get the drinks in.
8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?
I sat next to Paul McCartney and Bono at a bar uptown. We had to sit there next to them for about an hour and try to act normal. That was a trip.
9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?
Playing music is like really loud meditation. It’s the perfect balance of chaos and calm. I think being a mailman would be a cool job.
10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?
I’ve really never thought about it. I guess I would like a question that is super specific about a song that shows that the interviewer has listened to the music closely. That would be a surprise.
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?
Man there are a thousand little things I would go back and fix. No big changes just little tweaks. But I don’t let myself think that way. I release a lot of music so I just gotta keep the train moving.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Hard to pick. Maybe the first Sabbath album? It would just be so cool to be a part of getting those type of sounds for the first time ever. Heard those tracks come back in studio monitors and knowing that you are about to really shake things up when this gets released. That would be a cool feeling.
