The search for Nazi gold has been going on for seventy years, and now director Kevin MacDonald has taken it 90 meters under the Black Sea, searching for thirty million Reichsmarks of Russian gold sunk in the closing stages of World War II.

After submariner Robinson (Jude Law) and his friends are fired from their search-and-rescue jobs “like flushing shit down a toilet”, they resolve to rent a sub and recover the gold with a crew half-English and half-Russian in a rusty old Russian sub.

Spectacular footage of the sub from both inside and out makes the claustrophobia of being ninety meters underwater all too real, and as they try to evade detection from the Russian navy on the surface, Robinson struggles to keep the two halves of the crew from attacking each other.

Fraser, played with hateful psychotic relish by Ben Mendelsohn, escalates the international tensions, eventually snapping and causing a series of disasters which leave the boat crippled on a ledge at the bottom of the deep black sea, while young lad Tobin (talented youngster Bobby Schofield) gets in the middle of everything unwittingly.

The mission becomes a race for survival, with what’s left of the crew needing to cannibalise the long-dormant U-boat in order to get them to the surface again, but will greed for the gold get in the way of that happening? There’s a greater betrayal awaiting them too, but I shall refrain from dropping any more spoilers.

Thrilling and tense, Black Sea suffers from a predictable ending, but up until then it is worthy enough to follow on the high(er) standards of submarine classics like The Hunt For Red October, Crimson Tide and the granddaddy of them all, Das Boot.
