Review and Photographs by: Todd “Toddstar” Jolicoeur (

As their 2022 US Tour was winding down, the band decided to close out with two shows at their home away from home, The World Famous Machine Shop in Flint, MI.  After a rousing set from local band Avalon Black and tourmate openers Zillion, the crowd was properly warmed up — not that they needed a lot of priming for a Pop Evil show at The Shop.  The band hit the stage and it was game on from the minute the first chord hit.  The stage felt slightly different with frontman Leigh Kakaty taking a spot stage left in back on the drum riser allowing guitarist Dave Grahs, touring bassist Joey Walser, and guitarist Chris Laplante filling in to fill the front part of the stage and entertain the crowd.  The band fed off the energy from the packed sold out venue and gave it back in spades to the capacity audience.  There is something magical that takes place at the venue on a regular basis, but there is an extra something in the mix when Kakaty and crew arrive and plant themselves in Flint.  From behind the stringed assault stage center was drummer Hayley Cramer who holds how time and tempo seemingly without energy.  The smile and embarrassment on her face were undeniable as the crowd began a “Hayley” chant just a couple songs in.  As the band moved through songs new and old from its catalog, you can tell they still enjoy the songs and carefully cultivate a setlist for not only the crowds enjoyment but their own.  As they ready themselves for an overseas run we can all dig into the latest couple of tracks the band has unleashed “Paranoid (Crash & Burn)” and “Eye Of The Storm” — with the latter still rattling in my head after they kicked the show off with the track — to hold us over until they decide to come party with all of us on Dort Hwy once again.
