Tax season is upon us, and I needed a distraction from all that it comes with. With that in mind, I found myself at The Fillmore in Charlotte to check out Cannons and co-headliner Bob Moses, who was new to me sonically. The venue was filling quickly in time for opener Oxis to perform a cool set that was filled with electronic sampling her own doing as well as some guitar work all supporting her vocals. The fished theme set culled from her catalog was a first for me, but her talent was obvious as she worked her way through a handful of songs. Next up was Cannons and I was excited to see them once again after checking them out a couple of years ago in Tampa. The core trio of Michelle Joy, Ryan Clapham, and Paul Davis – came out and commanded the evening from the first strands of music during their set. Michelle ruled the stage and evening from behind a microphone moving around the stage singing her hear tout for the fans that packed the venue. Supporting recent release Everything Glows, the band wove new tracks into fan favorites and some hits. The lights and staging worked perfectly to help the bands performance and delivery of song after song. For the majority of the show guitarist Ryan and a bass player were relegated to their respective sides of the stage and out of the spotlight. The trio of songs – “Carousel,” “Bright Lights,” and “Heartbeat Highway” showed how seamlessly their different releases and tracks could be woven together to keep the crowd engaged and the energy in the venue up from track to track. The new disc was heavily featured with seven tracks swirled in making up almost half the evenings set. As their stage time dwindled, they pumped more energy into the crowd with closers “Bad Dream” and “Light As A Feather” before knocking us all on our ass with a killer delivery of “Fire For You.”
While billed as a co-headline tour, Bob Moses closed the evening in Charlotte. I have to admit, other than what I saw when researching them a bit, I knew very little going into the show. The electronic pop fusion the duo – Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance (along with a drummer and guitarist) – brought with them seemd to be exactly what the crowd was looking for. While not my normal musical fare, I found myself visiting their catalog post show when editing photos from the evening. Much like Cannons set, the lighting was used to enhance the set while the duo delivered an energetic set the crowd fed off of from open to close. Be sure to check out this tour if it rolls through your town and make it to the venue in time to check out the whole show. You just may find a new band to toss into your own playlist.
