A Dirty Dozen with ZOSIA WEST and BERG from REIGN OF Z – October 2022
According to a recent press release: “Pennsylvania based, dark melodic metal band REIGN OF Z has released the official music video for “Cellophane”! With the the video directed by Tom Flynn, “Cellophane” was produced by Steve Sopchak and Justin Spaulding. Singer Zosia West is no stranger to the dark side of life with lyrical content ranging from body dysmorphia, to bullying and sexual abuse; there is no shortage of expression to release in her meter and verse. Living by the motif of comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comfortable, Reign of Z has carved it’s path since its inception in 2017.” We get Zosia and Berg to discuss new music, influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Zosia: I think someone would need to re-listen to hear all the delivery and inflections to the lyrics also the dynamics and nuances in the song. If they’re diehard they’ll know.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
Berg: My friends needed a bass player for their band and what kept me in it was the feeling of playing live. Giving all that energy out and feeling it back from the crowd.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
Berg: Honestly I thought it was the glamour of music videos growing up and seeing it on MTV when they played videos a lot. I just appreciate all music.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Zosia: Amy Lee from Evanescence she’s truly someone I hope my path can cross. She’s inspired me in so many ways and gave women a platform to be in rock.
5. What is your favorite activity when out of the studio and/or not on tour? What do you like to do to unwind?
Berg: Spend Time with family and friends and my fiancé and Dio and Lola.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
Zosia: I always say if Evanescence and Marilyn Manson had a baby.
Berg: I think people just throw out the first female fronted band they know instead of thinking about it.
7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Zosia: Eric usually cooks, Berg usually gets drinks, and Grayson is always down to bust out an acoustic singalong.
8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?
Berg: Probably when Tommy Lee was three feet away from me at a Motley Crue show.
9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?
Zosia: I think the best part of being a musician is being able to travel and share your stories. Actress.
10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?
Zosia: I always was hoping to dig more into our upbringing… the juicy questions. Who do we sound like?
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?
Berg: Looking back on situations that we could change wouldn’t put us in the current situation that we are in. I wouldn’t change a thing.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose and what does that record mean to you?
Zosia: I would want to work with Amy Winehouse – such a talent.
