A Dirty Dozen with MR. STRANGLER of PORN – July 2019
According to a recent press release: “France’s industrial rockers PORN have released a new single titled “Evil Six Evil”. Mr. Strangler, the main character of a trilogy started in 2018 with the release of The Ogre Inside – Act I, is embracing his true self on the new album The Darkest Of Human Desires – Act II. He chose a dark path, being what he has always been: a killer. The track “Evil Six Evil” (read: evil seeks evil) is about his family rejecting him when they understood what he is, calling him an Evil person. Thus, he left that family to look for other evil persons to start his Death Cult.” We get Mr. Strangler to discuss new music, influences, and much more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Our last album, The Darkest Of Human Desires – Act II (February 2019) is the second part of a trilogy. The Ogre Inside – Act I is an album about inner struggle, about dark desires, how society can oppress your will. This is a fight no one can win, the Ogre that devours you from the inside always wins. The album is an invocation, a way to set the Ogre free, embrace your ”true”self and allow your darkest desires to express themselves. It’s an incitement to act. In this trilogy, The Ogre inside won this inner struggle, giving birth to Mr Strangler. In The Darkest Of Human Desires – Act II, Mr Strangler, by embracing his «true-self», expresses his dark impulses without limitations and has no boundaries. With his crew, Mr Strangler commits murders and massacres. He also invites everyone to make a step forward and act, invites you to express your darkest desires and join his death cult. For Mr Strangler and his team, the Ogre is released ! Let the massacre begin ! Let the darkest of human desires be : murder.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
Since the day I have played music for the first time. It’s all about doing music, creating. It’s not that much about career, I always knew that I would create music, novels. I am a writer too, wrote a sy-fy novel and short stories. I am working on a new novel, a prequel of my first novel: Contoyen. So I love to create characters and build stories, even in my musical work.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
I was very influenced by The Cure. Our name, PORN, come from their album PORNOGRAPHY. I am also very influenced by David Bowie’s career. I have read a lot of his interviews, and those about the business side are very interesting. He is an example of an artist and the way he controlled his career.
4. Who would be your main five musical influences?
The Cure, David Bowie, The Doors, Type O Negative, and Fields of the Nephilim.
5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Our current album, The Darkest Of Human Desires – Act II, was mastered by Tom Baker. The guy is responsible of the mastering of so many great albums: The Downward Spiral (NIN), Antichrist Superstar (MM), Hellbilly Deluxe (Rob Zombie). So I will try to work with another great producer.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
I would say that we are doing Industrial rock / Gothic Metal music. I don’t care about the comparison. In fact they are all right. If someone think that we sound like something, he is right… it’s all about taste!
7. What’s the best thing about being a musician
There is nothing good! When you do it properly, with your guts, it’s all about pain.
8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
We don’t do such thing. We are very annoying and not kind at all.
9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?
Eva Lovia
10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
A professional killer.
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?
Nope, no moment like that.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
The same as previously, I am not that type of person. I am always moving forward!
