Rolling into a packed parking lot and full venue, I knew what was headed my way from headliner Shinedown, but before I could get to that portion of the show, I had to experience Jelly Roll. Without much knowledge of what to expect other than a couple hits I had heard in passing, I waited for his show to start and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with a set full of cool songs that swirled together all of his various influences. His show featured as much pyro as most rock shows out there. Watching the show from the pit was an experience that added to the overall vibe of the show. I was able to watch and listen as fans pushed themselves against the barrier in order to get as close as they could and sing as if they were sharing the microphone and moment with the performer himself. After songs like “Son Of A Sinner,” “Dead Man Walking,” and closer “Save Me” I was converted and became a fan that is still spinning the songs in my office days after the show.
The stage was reset for the spectacle that is Shinedown and like clockwork the headliners took a preshow stance at front of the stage welcoming the crowd back to the a Shinedown show after a long wait. Kicking the show off with new material from their 2022 release Planet Zero, the band opened with “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo” and “America Burning” bookending the killer “Devil from their 2018 release ATTENTION ATTENTION. Vocally Brent Smith hasn’t missed a step and still sings with al he has and delivers each song with emotion and precision. It was as if the guys pulled the evenings setlist from my personal playlist as they ripped through some of the best songs in their catalog including “How Did You Love” and “Bully” keeping the energy up and the attitudes in check. Guitarist Zach Myers was all over the place moving from his mic stage left to the wings and center stage at times for solos or to share the moment with Smith and bassist Eric Bass. After a pause in the energy but not intensity with “The Crow & the Butterfly” they band rolled into a cool one-two punch of “Get Up” and “Enemies” before dropping a tandem of songs from the new disc as “Daylight” and title track “Planet Zero” hit the set before a couple other huge rockers “Cut the Cord” and “Monsters” set the stage for the evenings winddown. Drummer Barry Kerch kept perfect time and seemed to elevate the energy onstage with his smiles and heavy hitting drumming that paired perfectly with Bass’ bass playing and gravity defying leaping that accentuated his energy and excitement on stage. Huge smash “Second Chance” kicked the door open for my personal favorite in the bands collection with “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)” showing the fours guys firing on all cylinders. After an acoustic jam, the band took a moment to bring Jelly Roll onstage for a cover of “Simple Man” before sending us all into the night with “Sound of Madness” in our ears, on our lips, and ringing through our collective heads. I am more impressed each time I see the band perform and already can’t wait for the next time I get to experience Shinedown live.
