It’s almost 12 months since we last had The Bronx experience in Perth. Matt Caughthran (Vocals), Joby J. Ford (Guitar), Brad Magers (Bass), Ken Horne (Guitar) & Joey Castillo (Drums) came to impress on The Pennywise 2017 tour that time, and they did. Playing this time at Capitol on Friday 26th October it was their turn to headline, with both High Tension and Private Function supporting.

The Perth show is halfway through the current tour. The supports acts are settled into their roles and comfortable. Arriving towards the end of Private Function’s set the venue was only partially full, and it was a notably slow process before a reasonable crowd assembled for Melbourne’s High Tension. Front woman Karina Utomo has an engaging presence from the moment she hits the stage. Her alter ego delivers the bands diverse and topical material through her vocal artillery, screaming her own emotive and personal lyrics. Musically the band is tight, polished and well presented. Arguably a metal band they would no doubt have had many conversions from this tour. I am one.

The Bronx hit the stage running with instant energy, the set list different to the other shows, covering most the best bits from their five Albums. Of course they are much heavier in the flesh, and Matt performed for the most part on stage.

Personally I love the way this front man jumps around in the crowd, maybe he was sore but on this occasion he only got amongst it for a couple of tunes. The entire Perth crowd was interactive with these boys and it seemed effortless, there isn’t a need for the audience engaging chats to feel connected, the band and crowd embraced like old friends all through, and the mosh was hectic for the entire set.

A good punk show has always been about the smiles and the laughs for me, and I wasn’t disappointed – Punk by definition is political, it’s comedic, it’s angry and defiant all at the same time. It also unites people, music genres and attitudes. Thank you for bringing the show to Perth, looking forward to seeing you again soon.
