Shane’s Music Challenge: CHRIS ROBINSON – 2002 – New Earth Mud
6.5/10
Chris Robinson took time out from The Black Crowes to make this laid back slice of Americana as his debut solo album, and it’s a real fine slice of down home, pot-o-stew tunes (though his first solo release was earlier that same year, with the song Red Road on the soundtrack to the Goldie Hawn/Susan Sarandon movie The Banger Sisters)
Mixing up roots n’ roll, acoustic and electric grooves, a touch of country and soul, and a very Seventies singer/songwrite vibe, Robinson ended up with an album which showed a whole ‘nother side to him than his main band – in shelving the swaggering rock of The Crowes, he got in touch with his own soul.
Best bits: Opener Safe In The Arms Of Love is gorgeous, Ride is funky and boadacious, and Katie Dear is a sweet homage to his new bride, Goldie’s daughter Kate Hudson, that could have been ham fisted and skippable, but is instead a highlight.
