10 Quick Ones with BERNARD-P. BOYER of HERE ARE THE LIONS – August 2018

| 7 August 2018 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Emerging music group, Here Are The Lions, just recently released a new single, “Unsatisfied”. HATL is a unique combination of electronic, alternative rock and urban groove music. Additionally, their music has global influences from UK pop and rock to American R&B and rap, from European electronica to Asian pop.”  We get Bernard to discuss new music, influences, and much more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Here Are The Lions’ music is a new combination of Alternative Rock, R&B, Electronic, and Pop. Music patterns and assigned purposes to these genres have changed a lot in the last decade. Our approach to create new music is radical. After a few listens, music fans could get a combination of the epic rock influence and a contemporary flow coming from the lyrical influence of rap, most notably the way of swallowing words. Last but not least, you can find hidden nuggets behind the words.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

When I was a teenage boy, at 15, I felt the power that some great music heroes could have on generations. I was an unsatisfied boy, asking for more or disagreeing with the common law. Becoming an artist seemed to be pretty smart solution. I realized for the first time I’d be a musician when I came into a recording studio in London.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Marvin Gaye, Norman Whitfield, Michael Jackson, David Sylvian, David Bowie, Philip Glass, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre etc. As you can see there is an influence from a large range of music.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Paul McCartney because he’s THE legend of pop! Bobby Womack, just to listen to him grooving like nobody! And Coldplay, because they desperately need good songs (:-)))

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

They have to listen to HATL, then we could talk…

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The process of creation.

7. When the band is all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We usually meet in studios and there are pretty good restaurants all around…

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

A politician in rage. A writer full of anger.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Wow… Most of the time! Part of being human is making mistakes. Then we become strategist.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Meeting David Bowie during the Station to Station sessions would be amazing. The spirit floating in the studio, Carlos Alomar on guitar and one of the best music inspiration for this music hero! “Stay” is one of my favorites of all times!
