10 Quick Ones with THE COLOUR YOU – June 2018
According to a recent press release: “Alternative Rock Band THE COLOUR YOU has released the official music video for their single, “Set Me Free.” Originally premiered on Alternative Press Facebook Live, “Set Me Free” was filmed and directed by Sidney Lee Lopez. The Colour You is an American rock band from Baton Rouge, LA. Formed in 2016, TCY puts an interesting twist on the genre by blending hard-hitting, energetic guitar riffs, huge anthemic choruses with melodic vocal melodies, and infusing them with dark modern pop elements.” We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only die-hard fans might find?
It’s a blend of rock and alternative pop styles. We like to add in different synth elements for the pop production and Julian’s vocal delivery is really what pulls it all together to make it make sense. We do a LOT of cool vocal layering and ear candy type parts that may not jump out to you at first but are definitely a crucial element to the part. You’ll hear something new every time you listen.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
Coincidentally, we all come from music upbringings. It was just something that came naturally to all of us.
3. Who would be your main five musical influences?
This is impossible to answer. We pull inspiration from all over the place.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
I think it would be sick to work with Dan Lancaster, Matthew Healy, Alex Pall, or Tyler Hubbard.
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
We sound something like if your favorite rock band took your favorite pop artist to the prom.
6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
Creating music that others can connect with.
7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Bemo cooks. Robbie brings the drinks. Julian gets drunk and plays “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind.
8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
Bemo: I like building and fixing stuff, so maybe an engineer of some sort?
Julian: Probably an actor.
Robbie” I think building custom furniture would be pretty cool.
9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?
Absolutely! Knowing what we know now and being able to go back there’s a lot of things that would be different today.
10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for anyone record in history, which would you choose?
It would either have to be the session where Lynyrd Skynyrd created “Free Bird”, Metallica’s The Black Album, or Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park.
