10 Quick Ones with EHAB OMRAN of BLACK COFFEE – May 2018

According to a recent press release: “Black Coffee formed in early 2017 after drummer Tommy McCullough introduced singer|bassist, Ehab Omran, to guitarist Justin Young. Within the first few days, these artists began songwriting and the chemistry was overwhelmingly apparent. With the release of Black Coffee’s debut album, Take One, on April 21st, the Columbus, Ohio rockers definitely possess the sound, style, confidence and work ethic to drive this album’s success. The original single, “I Barely Know Her,” is available on all streaming services, and its accompanying video debuted Friday, April 20th.” We get Ehab to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our debut album, Take One, is unlike most albums on the market. It combines raw, unfiltered music with a vintage recording style. We record in a room together without a metronome, instrument samples, drum-triggers or pitch-correction.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

The three of us started listening to music from a very young age. That first song you hear that makes you tap your foot, or hum along, you tend to remember for a long time. For each of us it was the spirit and attitude of rock&roll that turned us on to becoming musicians ourselves.

3. Who would be your main six musical influences?

Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses, and Grandfunk Railroad.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Robert Plant

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Classic Rock & Roll with a powerful modern groove. It’s loud and hits hard, but melodic and you can dance to it!

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Watching an audience come to life, respond to the music we play and the words we sing.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

I seem to always have an acoustic guitar sitting two feet away from me if it’s not already in his hands! We like to leave the cooking to the professionals at our local fast food joints around here! As for the drinks, well, we tend to smoke 😉

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

We’d probably just open a café. But not allow any sugar or creamer in the premises.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

We can gladly say that thus far we have no regrets and have wronged no persons. We plan to continue this track record furthermore.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

After wrestling over the laptop and twisting many arms, we would have wanted to be a fly on the wall for Black Sabbath’s self-titled recording session.
