Shane’s Music Challenge: THE DONNAS – 2002 – Spend The Night
7/10
All girl band The Donnas can be found in the back streets and alleyways around town peddling sugar-coated fun rock n’ roll that harks back to the simple days of The Ramones and The Runaways.
With no agenda but self-empowerment as attractive young girls on the lookout for parties, boys and a damn good time, it’s easy to see why not just chicks but blokes too dig their simple-but-effective assault on your stereos.
Spend The Night was their first album for major label Atlantic (their fifth overall), and saw some of the rougher edges of their previous work (punkier to start with, then harder rocking on …Turn 21) being ironed out. The inevitable pressure to sell more units by sounding more commercial would backfire on them on next album Gold Medal, but at this stage they were the shit, bouncing their way through riff-fuelled, lust-driven tracks like Take It Off, Dirty Denim, Not The One, Please Don’t Tease and Take Me To The Backseat.
Some other stuff you might dig
