Shane’s Music Challenge: LIVING COLOUR – 1991 – Biscuits EP
8/10
This little EP from Living Colour still strikes a powerful chord with me, covering as it does many aspects of the band’s oeuvre.
There’s the funky cover of James Brown’s Talkin’ Loud And Sayin’ Nothing, and the hardcore frenzy of live track Desperate People. Their take on Al Green’s Love And Happiness, an unreleased recording from the Times Up album sessions, transforms the song into a stop-start blues with equally amazing performances from Corey Glover on vocals and guitarist Vernon Reid.
Memories Can’t Wait – another live track – is similarly electric and highlighting a band on fire, while a scratchy Burning of The Midnight Lamp shows the band at their most adventurous and exploratory, turning Hendrix’s 60’s classic into something very modern. The EP closes with another outtake from the Times Up sessions, Money Talks.
Top stuff.
