Shane’s Music Challenge: Blue Öyster Cult – 1971 – Blue Öyster Cult
5.5/10

Blue Oyster Cult - self titled cover

With their debut album’s stark black & white cover, quasi-religious overtones and fittingly cultish logo that evoked good and evil historical icons, BÖC were always going to be more than your average barroom boogie band.

Guided by svengali and madman, Sandy Pearlman, the album opens with Transmaniacon MC which sets the tone for heavy boogie with intelligent, literate and esoteric lyrics. Then Came The Last Days Of May and Stairway To The Stars lash their left of centre world views to a triple-lead guitar rock n’ roll assault, and their ace in the hole is the still epic Cities On Flame With Rock n’ Roll.
