Birth School Metallica Death Vol 1 book cover

An ambitious project this – to delve deeply into the world of the biggest of the BIG FOUR, the thrash titans who became rock gods, Metallica… and to do it over two intricate and in depth volumes.

Volume 1 covers the background of the band members and formation of the band, all the way through to the 3 August, 1991 listening party for the Black Album at Madison Square Garden, and draws on extensive research, including the authors’ own long interview history with members of the band.

It’s difficult to bring something new to a story which has been told countless times already, but Brannigan & Winwood still manage an above-average effort which hits a high water mark with the input of Fleming Rasmussen, the Danish producer who helmed the bands second through fourth albums.

Despite an over-reliance on the most floral of language, and a tendency to pad out the most minor of events into multiple-page musings, Birth School METALLICA Death does a pretty good job of covering most of the bases in the evolution of one of the greatest bands alive.
