It takes a bit to get Perth folks out at the best of times, let alone on a Tuesday night.

Tonight’s Perth Blues Club star attraction is rising UK blues guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor – and the punters came in their droves, a solid crowd front and centre from Andrew Winton’s solo opening slot.

Having suitably warmed everyone up with a multi-instrumental mix of covers (Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, amongst others) and originals, Winton jumped up to back Paul Gioia for a feisty set that blended boogie woogie and gospel piano with a swampy, ragtime blues straight out of N’Orleans.

Gioia delivers a Dr John-esque eclecticism to the set whilst reknowned jazz vocalist Victoria Newton belts out the songs like it’s a 50’s juke joint full of cheap liquor and expensive women.

Joanne Shaw Taylor’s London accent is completely at odds with her sultry and husky singing voice and scorching blues style.

An amazing player, Shaw influences go into a melting pot which cooks up a sound that is very much Joanne Shaw Taylor, whilst referencing greats such as Clapton, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more.

Unassuming and unpretentious – shy even – Shaw Taylor flails her long blonde mane around like a dervish, her face a mixture of joy and concentration as she plays a selection of solo material from her three albums including Diamonds In The Dust, You Should Stay I Should Go, Going Home and a mesmerising extended take on Jimi Hendrix’s Manic Depression, earning herself a standing ovation at the end of her main set.

Shaw Taylor comes back to flay her Les Paul for one more soulful rock song, a blistering Just Another Word, and despite the one hour ten minutes headlining slot being light on by anyone’s standards, the chance to see this blazingly talented performer was more than worth coming out on a weeknight for.
