Thank fuck for the Lambrini Girls. There are a lot of things happening in the world today which evoke fury in many of us, but it’s people like Phoebe Lunny and Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez who have the balls to put it into words and take it to the streets in age-old punk rock style.

Opener Big WETT’s bass-heavy electro sex dance grooves get the swelling crowd in the mood first. I have no idea how much she’s actually singing and how much of her vocals were in the doof-doofing backing tracks, but she bounced and jiggled vigorously in various stages of undress, showed off a formidable strap-on appendage for 69, and grinded like her life depended on it through Ride Me Like A Pony.

Big WETT

She’s entertaining, no doubt about it – part strip-tease, part dance porn – and her crowd friendly rude grooves are ‘punk’ in their own way.

Bad Apple opens the Lambrini Girls set, Lunny parting the crowd like Moses doing his Red Sea party trick before inciting a co-ordinated melee of a mosh pit, something she would do repeatedly throughout the set with ever-more-frantic results.

With Macieira-Boşgelmez thrashing her bass guitar and touring member Sam pounding the drums, Lunny orchestrates the mayhem like a mad scientist conducting a riot, donning a guitar here and there, screaming like a banshee, inciting scenes of glorious mayhem as she rails against war, bigotry, the class divide, misogyny and whatever else is on offer. As mentioned, there is a LOT to be furious about.

She has the crowd chanting “fuck the king” during God’s Country, “trans rights matter” at one point, draping a ‘Free Palestine’ flag over the amps when it’s proffered from the audience, declaring “let’s do something stupid” before clambering up the outside of the balcony and diving into the crowd, and announcing “this is one of the best gigs we’ve ever played,” seemingly sincerely. There’s no doubt it’s a frenzy from where we’re standing, and there’s plenty more to come from a set which covers most of their debut album plus earlier singles and EP tracks.

Boys in The Band calls out sexual assault and abuse in the music industry, No Homo is in your face and abrasive in the best possible way, Craig David and Cuntology 101 are crowdsurfing swearathons which put Big WETT’s smutty fluff to shame, and a fierce encore of Big Dick Energy is enough “to pretend the world isn’t ending for two seconds.”

It’s mayhem – glorious, punk-fuelled mayhem. Thank fuck for the Lambrini Girls.
