Toronto natives The Trews have spent the last two years carving a small niche out of Australia’s East coast, and with 900+ shows under their belts, these guys are as earthy as a ute full of dirt, and tight as a nun’s nasty.
The latest step in their quest for Aussie domination is an East Coast tour (Perth misses out again – and we miss you guys!!! 🙁 ) and this fantastic little EP.
Well, I say “little” but with 8 tracks it’s really a mini-LP!
The Trews play a mighty strong opening gambit with one of their favourites Poor Ol’ Broken Hearted Me, re-recorded here with none other than Rich Robinson of Black Crowes fame on louchely jagged guitar, and Shannon Noll contributing a surprisingly rootsy, gritty and authentic vocal. Put simply – it’s one of their best songs and they may just have made it a little better.
A cover of one of troubadour Paul Kelly’s most infectious songs, Leaps And Bounds, is given a Trews makeover to tremendous effect – this is why we love music: heartfelt and touching, passionate and wonderfully uplifting.
The Trews stretch out over these 8 tracks as well – there’s a gospel honk (Lord, Keep Me In Mind), a signature Trews rocker in Oblivion (also featuring Rich Robinson), and a Sticky Fingers-era Stonesy country blues (Not Yours To Love – featuring a mighty tasty Robinson solo).
Rounding this little gem out is the tale of mistaken sexuality Herm-Aphrodite (She Was A Guy) and the raucous and road-weary …And We Are The Trews, featuring a short but feisty solo from John-Angus MacDonald.
If you know The Trews, then rest assured you need this mini album. If you don’t… why? They’re a treasure – start with this then work backwards, and make sure you catch them live when they play your town – you won’t regret it
