Fit For A King just kicked off their North American Lonely God Tour, and we were lucky enough to catch the second date right here at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg. And yeah… they didn’t just show up, they brought the heat. To my knowledge, this was the only sold-out show on the tour so far, which honestly doesn’t surprise me. Winnipeg has always shown up for Fit For A King, and with the lineup they brought along, UK’s Acres, France’s Ten56, and Texas friends Invent Animate, it was a perfect storm. A truly stacked bill. In my opinion, every stop on this tour should be sold out. It was that good. If my daughter were writing this review since I had the honour of bringing her with me on this go, it would be simple: “It was perfect, period.” But I’ll try to give you a bit more.
This was a special show. Four bands on the bill is rare these days, most tours stick to three, so getting that extra act already made the night feel bigger. Acres kicked things off with a tight 25-minute set, and I’ll admit, I must’ve forgotten just how good they are live. Their sound walks that perfect line between atmospheric and punchy lush, emotional melodies layered over driving riffs that set the tone for the night ahead. It was the ideal way to open an evening of metalcore. Big respect for making the trip from the UK to Winnipeg and absolutely delivering. Next up was Ten56., a band completely new to me coming all the way from Paris, France and wow, what a discovery. These guys put on an absolute clinic. Their sound is unapologetically heavy down-tuned, jagged riffs, punishing breakdowns but what really stood out was their control of dynamics. They knew when to pull things back, creating these eerie, almost intimate moments before slamming you right back into chaos. I walked away a fan. No question. Then came Invent Animate, making their long-awaited return to Winnipeg after about a decade. You could feel the anticipation in the room people had been waiting for this. And they delivered in a big way. They easily could have headlined; they were that good. Marcus Vik’s vocal range is unreal effortlessly shifting between angelic cleans and crushing lows and the band as a whole builds these massive, cinematic soundscapes without ever losing their edge. It’s technical, emotional, and heavy all at once. A triumphant return, and hopefully not another ten-year wait.
And then, the moment everyone had been waiting for. The Lonely God banner dropped, the lights went out, and one by one, Fit For A King took the stage. No wasted time, they came out swinging with “Begin the Sacrifice,” setting the tone immediately. What I really appreciated was how much love Lonely God got in the setlist. Too often bands say they’re touring a new record and then only play a couple tracks, but not here. We got eight songs from the album, including “Technium,” “Extinction,” and the title track “Lonely God,” which closed out the main set. They also gave us some of the album’s more emotional moments, like “Between Us,” carried beautifully by Ryan “Tuck” O’Leary’s vocals, and “Shelter,” before closing the night with “Witness the End.” It’s a set that balances heaviness with vulnerability, and it works. Of course, they didn’t forget the classics. Dark Skies came in strong with “Backbreaker,” “Shattered Glass,” and “Price of Agony” all absolute crushers and the fan-favorite “When Everything Means Nothing,” which hit hard during the encore. The Path also got its due with “Breaking the Mirror” and “God of Fire.” And for me personally, “Keeping Secrets” was a standout I’m a bit bias here since its one of my favorites and the song lives rent-free in my head, and honestly, I can’t imagine a Fit For A King set without it. That and “When Everything Means Nothing” are must-haves every time.
Performance-wise, the band was locked in. Ryan Kirby somehow sounds better every time I see them his vocals were razor sharp all night, and that 30-second scream at the end of “Backbreaker”? Unreal. Daniel Gailey’s guitar work was crisp, tight, and absolutely punishing, delivering that signature Fit For A King tone, equal parts precision and brutality. Trey Celaya on drums was an absolute machine, thunderous kicks, sharp snare cracks, and relentless energy that drove every song forward without missing a beat. And Ryan O’Leary’s bass tied it all together with that deep, gritty backbone, not to mention his signature spins across the stage, bringing both style and substance to the performance. This wasn’t just a concert, it was a statement. A reminder of why Fit For A King continues to sit at the top of the metalcore scene. Tight, emotional, heavy, and honest. If this tour is coming anywhere near you, don’t think twice. Go. Because if Winnipeg was any indication… this tour isn’t just good, it’s something special.
