I found myself at another new venue with camera in hand to see an artist I covered at a small bar previously and to say this venue was better suited for Taylor Acorn is an understatement. Having just released Poster Child, Taylor hit the road and landed at Charlotte’s Amos’ Southend on a Friday night. As the venue started to fill, the opening band Wilt, out of Los Angeles, came out and played a cool set of rock laced with enough pop to keep the mood light and fun, perfectly setting the stage for the headliner that would join us all soon. The five band members gelled perfectly and played through their set, with lead singer Chelsea Rifkin dropping little anecdotes and banter on the crowd while Aaron Liebman, Andrew Vance, Jake Shpiner, and Dan Bermudez anchored the sonic part of the show. They played through their set picking up new fans with each new song they played, myself included. There was something contagious about the energy they brought to the stage, and it was well received by the crowd that made it out for their set.
Next up was Taylor Acorn, armed with a lot of great material including tracks from the new release. She wasted no time jumping in with songs that got the crowd singing alone to every word and ad lib thrown their way. By the time she hit the stage it was damn near capacity on the main floor with the upstairs railing lined with people as well. Swirling in new music and old, Acorn was checking boxes and making sure everyone heard a little bit of what they wanted as well as maybe hearing a new song or two. From song to song, the energy seemed to climb on stage with guitarist Ricky Jab prowling his side of the stage, dancing, and spinning, stepping up onto the drum riser, and enjoying himself as much as anyone in the crowd. Adding to the musical landscape for the evening was interim drummer Connor Allen. His drumming was heavy handed and added a bit of punch and attitude to the already amped up pop / punk / rock tracks Taylor brought with her this evening. Adding to her fun, her mom and sister were in attendance as well. One of the coolest moments of the evening was watching her get assistance from a young fan and a huge wheel to randomly add to the evening’s set, having informed us all she reads the comments and knows the fans want to hear certain songs. Another highlight was watching her grab an acoustic guitar at a couple different moments through the evening. Her voice was strong, her attitude was up and full of excitement, and her smile was obvious. She was having such a good time, you almost hear the smile in her voice as she took us from track to track throughout the set. I hope to see her continue her rise onto bigger stages but will miss seeing her shine as brightly as she did tonight in the more intimate settings like she had tonight.
