A week before the release of her latest – All Species Parade – Jenny Scheinman found herself inside the Detroit Institute of Arts performing for a packed room. The crowd was a wide range of jazz and violin fans from various demographics with one thing in common… love for the arts. With only a brief introduction and no show stopping fanfare, Scheinman and her accompanying artists proceeded to play 90 minutes of amazing jazz from the previously mentioned upcoming release and other compositions and collaborations from across her catalog. With the Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera painted in 1932-1933 as a backdrop, Jenny and her jazz counterparts created beautiful music that swirled perfectly throughout the Central Wing of Rivera Court cascading into the entry way of the Institute and other art installations within proximity of the area where the band was set up. A handful of tracks from the new release made an appearance in the evenings set, including a couple personal favorites such as “Ornette Goes Home” and “Every Bear That Ever Was.” These songs tied nicely with other tracks from Jenny’s past collaborations and projects. While all the music performed this evening was vocal free, there was nothing lacking from the sound that washed across the capacity crowd. Jenny’s supporting cast for the East Coast leg of her tour and performances included Carmen Staaf (piano), Steve Cardenas (guitar), Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums). Another excellent selection played was “The Shutdown Stomp”, which featured a storyteller style intro from Jenny as she did with several of the songs played. The time passed quickly and before we knew it the room lights had been raised and Scheinman and crew played through the head of one more tune to close the show before heading to the merch stand to shake hands and discuss the evening with those interested in saying hello. I highly recommend checking out All Species Parade – both the live and recorded versions – if you get an opportunity near you. While you may not get the benefit of enjoying the music aurally while you are treated visually to artwork such as the mural we saw in Detroit, it is still an incredibly enjoyable evening to experience.
