The House of Blues in Orlando pulsed with a stirring energy as two heavyweights of the modern pop punk scene, Holding Absence and Sleeping with Sirens, took the stage for a night that fans won’t forget. The venue, with its intimate, unique atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for what turned out to be a masterclass in emotional performance and musical intensity. Holding Absence took the stage, a band that has steadily built a reputation for their emotionally charged sound. From the moment they opened with “Gravity” it was clear that this was not going to be just another opening set. Frontman Lucas Woodland’s voice soared effortlessly, delivering every note with a rawness that doesn’t come often in modern music. The physical energy he brought to his stage performance had me anticipating every next move. Woodland’s dynamic stage presence, paired with tight instrumentals from the band, made for a performance that had the audience filled with an exciting warmth. Each song felt like a cathartic release, with fans jumping and screaming along to every lyric.
As the lights dimmed and the crowd buzzed with anticipation, Sleeping with Sirens took to the stage, shifting the energy of the fans into overdrive. Kicking off with “Tally It Up, Settle The Score,” they wasted no time in proving why they remain one of the most beloved bands in post-hardcore. Kellin Quinn’s iconic vocals, both ethereal and piercing, commanded the audience, blending perfectly with the heavy riffs and driving beats from his bandmates. The chemistry within the band was palpable as they delivered fan favorites like “James Dean” and “Cheers To This” bringing nostalgia to their set. What stood out most during Sleeping with Sirens’ performance was the important message of suicide awareness Quinn brought to the audience. Before performing the iconic “Better Off Dead,” Quinn touched on the personal, intimate meaning behind the song, and reminded the fans why life is beautiful and to keep pushing forward. Fans clung to every word, with the audience often singing louder than Quinn himself. As the final notes of ‘Sleeping with Sirens’ echoed through the venue with the hit that started it all, “If You Can’t Hang,” there was an undeniable feeling of satisfaction, but also an unspoken understanding that everyone present had witnessed something special. The band closed, leaving the fans emotionally buzzing. Both bands brought something unique to the night—Holding Absence with their crushing soundscape, and Sleeping with Sirens with their infectious energy and emotional connection with the fans. It wasn’t just a concert; it felt like a collective experience where the band and audience connected on a deep personal level. The night was a reminder of the power live music has to unite people, to allow them to lose themselves and find themselves in equal measure. If you are a fan of the groups, they are a must-see.
