A Dirty Dozen with AKIAVEL – August 2021

| 19 August 2021 | Reply

According to the band’s bio: “Akiavel is a Death Metal band from the South of France, formed in 2018. The band released their first, self-titled, EP in December 2018, showcasing their trademark sound: a mix of Groove, Thrash, Black and Old-school Death Metal, with a touch of melodic riffs, heavy rhythmic and hardcore sounds. They draw their inspiration from bands such as: Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Testament and Gojira. Akiavel’s debut full-length album, V was recorded at Studio Artmusic and mastered by Kohlekeller Studio, and was released on 20 February 2020 on Mystic Production.  Their latest album, Vae Victis will be released April 23, 2021. In 2018, vocalist Auré, guitar player Chris, drummer Butch, and bass player Jay came together to create a sound distinctly modern but with an appreciation for the old school death metal legends from the ‘80s & early ‘90s. It didn’t take long until the chemistry between this quartet to hit critical mass.” We get Auré and Chris to discuss new music, influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Chris: There is nothing purely hidden in our latest album, Vae Victis, but the album is a concept album. It is made out of 10 songs which all are about a different serial killer. And as you can imagine, the music videos we shot are also about serial killers. (laugh)

Auré: Diehard fans would notice that our first album, V (Five), released last year, was also a concept album. It was about the 5 wounds of the soul, 5 songs being written on the victims’ side, and the 5 others being seen from the executioners’ point of view.

Chris: We can say the the third album will also be a concept album. (laugh)

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Chris: When I was about 11 or 13 years old, I fell in love with Iron Maiden. A few weeks later, when I saw a low price guitar in a music store, I asked my mother to buy me one… I quickly learnt to play with a friend, but I can’t actually read music.

Auré: I’ve always been attracted to rock music. One day I discovered the group Sinister, I understood that a woman could make saturated voices. So I trained every day with passion to figure out how this type of singing worked. (laugh)

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Chris: I would answer James Hetfield from Metallica, especially the Master of Puppets and …And Justice For All eras, he is THE king.

Auré: I was rocked on AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Scorpions… But when I decided to become a singer, I trained on Cannibal Corpse and Carcass.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Auré: For me, that would be Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Benighted, Aborted and Napalm Death.

Chris: I would say Metallica, Sepultura, Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Pantera!

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Chris: James Hetfield, for sure, but I doubt he will answer me! (laugh)

Auré: Jeff Walker. It would be an honor. I’ve been a fan for so many years!

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Chris: I’d say that Akiavel is the music we like, and want to listen to, powerful music with melodies and a very brutal voice. Akiavel has his own universe and a style which mixes the 4 different musical backgrounds of its musicians, a mix between Thrash metal, Death Metal, Heavy Metal and Hardcore.

Auré: Yes, our music ranges from classical Heavy Metal, like the great Iron Maiden, to pure violence like Benighted or Aborted, but also Thrash like Slayer or Testament, and even Hatebreed! Our music is deeply rooted into every and all metal styles. (laugh) Generally speaking, I do not like to be compared to female fronted bands. Even though I know it’s inevitable… We are just four people with our different influences and backgrounds. Together we are Akiavel. Who cares if I’m a woman?

7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Chris: Jay (bass) would cook, he is an excellent cooker, Butch (drums) and Auré would bring (many) drinks and of course I’ll be the first to grab the guitar… but I won’t sing. (laugh)

Auré : I confirm… Haha!

8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?

Chris: It would be in the 90’s. (laugh)

Auré: It’s very hard to answer, I can’t think of a recent band. (laugh)

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

Chris: My job is not to be a musician, sadly (laugh), but musician is my dream job. Apart from the question of making a living out of music, the best part of being a musician is to be creative when you want, and share it with people!

Auré: We are not professional musicians, we all have day jobs, but we are lucky enough to be able to spend a lot of time writing and play our music!

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

Chris: The question that would be cool? Do you want me to connect you to Metallica? (laugh)

Auré: We are not tired of anything, the band is, luckily, still fairly recent. (laugh)

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Chris: We never look back!  Since we want to go far, we don’t have time to waste looking backward. (laugh)

Auré: Yes, we are happy with what we did so far. It is maybe not perfect, but what we achieved is probably not too bad. (laugh)

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Chris: Wow…. there are a lot of bands that I would have loved to be in… For the recording session, I would say Master of Puppets, and for the band, I’d answer The Beatles or The Rolling Stones… But it’s very difficult to choose! (laugh)

Auré: The Black Album from Metallica. A very big moment in the history of recording in music!
