An annual show that seems to land on American soil each year is Brit Floyd’s vision of Pink Floyd and their legacy. This year, the show popped up in Detroit at Music Hall and I couldn’t wait to see this always phenomenal show at such a cool venue in an intimate setting. Leader Damian Darlington always culls through the Floyd catalog to pull together an amazing setlist that surprises many and pleases most. The band he has with him takes this music and the treatment of it as seriously as he does. The production team always brings their A-game as well, with lasers, video, and other effects and props that add to the shows authenticity and enjoyment. The show kicked off with an amazing version of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)” and it set the mood and expectation for the rest of the evening. As a casual fan of the original music, the next two tunes “Arnold Layne” and “High Hopes” were unknown to me, but not the rest of the capacity crowd. The band worked their way through the songs and seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage, although their serious attention to each detail of the music was very evident from note to note and song to song. I thoroughly enjoyed the one-two punch of “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” and “Mother” with the killer visuals and combination of vocals and music that, if you closed your eyes, was as if you were at a classic era Floyd Show. Damian’s mastery of vocals and guitars – both electric and acoustic – show his dedication to the music and delivery of a perfect show. There were fan favorites and obscure tracks peppered throughout the evening. While other songs decorated the musical landscape for the evening, the tour’s namesake during the encore – “Eclipse” – was a killer rendition that rivaled the original in sound and composition, but seemed to have an added bit of life in a live scenario. If you get a chance to see this show in 2018, get out to one when it swings near you… and get ready for next year – Another Brick In The Wall 2019.
