St James Sirens open their debut album with the kind of self-aggrandising bombast more expected of a gangsta rapper or a WWF wrestler, but they quickly show that this is no hollow braggadocio – the muscular riffs and monolithic rhythms of Empires Fall bring the likes of Five Finger Death Punch and Fozzy to mind.
Senseless deftly balances in-your-face boiling point rage and a chanted chorus with some cleverly restrained technical metal, before Rum Deficiency – a short spoken pirate tale that says more in an interlude than most songs do in ten times as long – prove that St James Sirens aren’t afraid to fuck with the rules.
What To Break might sound like it’s about to launch into Pantera-heavyness, but again SJS’s restraint, technical skills and a great vocal take it to another, very individual, place altogether.
St James Sirens have developed an impressively unique blend of sounds that really impress through this collection of well-crafted songs – as good as any modern metal band in the world. Keep an eye out for more from them.
