Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino are out on tour celebrating 10 years since the release of their breakout album Grand. The album, recorded in Matt’s childhood Vermont home, received critical acclaim and launched them into the mainstream. The duo is known for their energetic, raucous and somewhat raunchy live shows. Despite the rainy cold weather, the Egyptian room was full by showtime. They got right into it playing Grand in its entirety, supplemented with a slide show of old photos taken back in Matt’s family home. They talked about the early years in rural Vermont and recording songs in Matt’s bedroom. They have come a long way since. Their stage production included CO2 jets, balloons, confetti and my favorite inflatable adult dolls that were tossed around like beach balls throughout the night. Kim was her usable gregarious self, encouraging crowd surfing, mosh pit dancing and even flashing the crowd. She had a large knee brace on for a torn ACL which limited her from jumping on the drum sets as she normally does. The pair seemed to enjoy every second of the show and their infectious energy was felt by all in attendance. The crowd was dancing, jumping and singing along. Smiles were abundant and after an extensive setlist everyone left happy.
