The Masquerade in Atlanta, GA was packed with a diverse group of the biggest Palaye Royale fans for this stop on The Funeral tour. The band has a huge following of young fans eager to keep the love for rock ‘n’ roll alive. The show kicked off with some spacey glam rock from Atlanta’s own Starbenders. This band really set the atmosphere for the night, with moody guitars and Kimi Shelter’s haunting voice. Also supporting Palaye Royale was Weathers, an indie rock band with a vintage look and catchy, soaring choruses. I really enjoyed their poppy, carefree presence on the stage and infectious dance moves.
Palaye Royale took over the stage in front of a crowd of adoring fans, and they honestly blew me away. Frontman Remington Leith is one of the best performers I’ve seen on stage, commanding the crowd and never staying still for more than a second. The entire band was constantly interacting with the fans, jumping into the crowd (guitars and all), expertly moving around us photographers and leaping over us, and probably terrifying security (especially when Leith climbed up into the balcony – twice). The band ran through a set of their best material, including “Don’t Feel Quite Right,” “You’ll Be Fine,” “Dying In A Hot Tub,” “Teenage Heartbreak Queen,” and “Mr. Doctor Man.” Leith mentioned that this tour was the last time they would hear a lot of these songs live, so it was definitely a memorable experience for their biggest fans. Palaye Royale returned to the stage after “How Do You Do?” to play an encore of “Ma Cherie” and “All My Friends.” This show was easily one of the best I’ve experienced at The Masquerade, and I hope Palaye Royale continues to give younger people a love for old school rock ‘n’ roll by giving them an up-close, crazy experience. It was a pleasant surprise to see the impact this show had on me, and it’s easy to say that this band is full of talented musicians that will continue to see success.
Setlist: Don’t Feel Quite Right – You’ll Be Fine – Death Dance – Masochist – Dying in a Hot Tub – Teenage Heartbreak Queen – Fucking With My Head – Get Higher – Hospital Beds – Mr. Doctor Man – How Do You Do? – Ma Chérie – All My Friends
