Prog Rock powerhouse Nothing More came to the Concourse for a Monday night show. The quartet from the San Antonio breaks many molds. Not conforming to the mainstream, their lyrics and videos are deep, philosophical and brutally honest. Formed in 2003, they released several self produced albums, before signing with the Eleven Seven Music Group. Known for their frenetic energy, I was highly anticipating their performance. For a Monday night there was a pretty good turnout and everyone was stoked for the show. A typical August evening in Knoxville, it was hot and humid. The venue’s AC was not working, so by show time it was really HOT. The guys took the stage to a loud ovation, opening with Mr. MTV. Within minutes they were all drenched with sweat. Lead singer Johnny Hawkins said if you came out to hear a mistake free show, this wasn’t it. Ears filled with sweat hampered their communication. That didn’t put a damper on their performance. Hawkins was all over the stage and reaching out to the fans. The crowd showed their support by singing along and raucous cheers. Guitarist Mark Vollelunga, bassist Daniel Oliver as well as Hawkins played a bass solo in unison. Hawkins, once their drummer, had an accessory set up front and contributed percussion. Paul Obrien was the official drummer. Despite the conditions, it was a fantastic set. The band sounded great and the crowd was really into it. Nothing More is really gaining traction. They have just one more show before wrapping up the current tour and taking some well deserved rest. Catch them live the next time they head out. They put on a fantastic show! I also highly recommend checking out their music, they are a breath of fresh air in the prog rock scene.
