10 Quick Ones with ANDRE of COAT CHECK GIRLS – May 2018
According to a recent press release: “LA-based quartet Coat Check Girl has released a new single called “Twenty Nine.” The bright track is a departure from the band’s usual dark, indie-electro sound, although it still shares a somber story.” We get singer Andre to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Our latest single “Twenty Nine” is a very pop-y and colourful one, at least musically speaking. The lyrics are about a personal story about my cousin abruptly dying last year, he was 29, and that obviously affected my family and I,. After months of grieving I just kept on thinking that he was always gonna be 29, he was never gonna have kids, see them grow, etc etc. He was stuck at 29.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
The bands we love got us into this crazy world. For me, personally, Linkin Park and Blink 182 were the first artists that I loved. I was 10 or 11 years old when I fell in love with them, and that love for these bands led me to find Metallica. Once I heard Metallica for the first time, I knew I wanted to get a guitar and make music for a living.
3. Who would be your main five musical influences?
Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, Walk The Moon, My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
Probably Post Malone. We love him, and we think it would be a crazy but awesome mix.
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
We’re a mix of rock, pop, and indie, with some electronic aspects.
6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
The best thing is that just like an architect, you get to create something from nothing.
7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Toby (drums) and I can always eat and drink, so we’re the one’s in charge of that most of the time haha. Nate (guitars) and Alfi (bass) are always playing their instruments and jamming.
8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
Anything in the music industry. An A&R, Producer, Publicist or anything in between
9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?
We believe that mistakes help us grow in every way, but in all honesty we’ve worked with some people we wish we hadn’t. Sometimes the money spent on different people who didn’t really bring anything to the mix, could’ve been used for something more productive, but you live, you learn.
10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
I would go back to the recording session of Master of Puppets by Metallica. That album is one of my favourite albums of all time, and seeing Metallica in action back then would’ve been amazing.
