Michigan-based Pop Evil is out promoting a new album and the current tour brought them “home” to Detroit’s Fillmore on a Friday night. As the venue filled up during the course of the two opening bands sets, the anticipation grew as quickly as the size of the crowd. Once the stage was transitioned and the lights came down, the energy went up. Soon, the band made their way to the stage with instruments at the ready. Drummer Hayley Cramer sat atop her percussion throne ready to anchor the show while guitarists Davey Grahs and Nick Fuelling each took a side of the stage to roam through out the show. Bassist (and friend) Matt DiRito took his normal spot just off-center near the front, but also freely moving about to make sure he touched just about every inch of the stage through the show. Once the first song was in full swing, front man Leigh Kakaty took control from behind his microphone stand and led the charge for the rest of the night. The show kicked off with “Ways to Get High” and the pace of the show followed the sets strong start. Next up was fan favorite “Boss’s Daughter” and we all knew we were in for a GREAT time. With a self-titled album out, the band tossed in five of the disc’s eleven tracks into the set and the crowd ate them up. The band’s energy and enthusiasm was matched note for note as the crowd sang along to songs new and old, but seemed to come alive when the first single “Waking Lions” came through the sound system. Other new tracks that met with the crowds approval were “Ex Machina” and a personal favorite “Nothing But Thieves”. The band played a rousing version of “Monster You Made” that kept me humming all the way home after the show. The bands encore was killer and took us all out on a high note when the one-two punch of “Footsteps” and “Trenches” were used to bid us all farewell. The band has dates popping up for summer dates and you need to see them out playing the new songs along side the killer tracks from their catalog.
