Legend.  The term is thrown around by music fans regarding their love of a certain band, super group, genre, etc.  When I think of musical legends quite a few names come to mind, and I was lucky enough last weekend to check another legend off of my bucket list when Bettye LaVette brought her band and her Things Have Changed tour into her hometown of Detroit, MI to play an intimate show at the Jazz Cafe inside Music Hall.  The seats filled up quickly and the anticipation grew faster and louder than the rest of the white noise in the room as people listened to jazz piped through the sound system while enjoying a beverage and light conversation. When the time for Ms. LaVette arrived, the excitement in the room rose and the smiles around the room told the story of what was about to happen.  LaVette returned the love and the smile and then proceeded to do what she does best… sing from the bottom of her soul.  With a deep catalog and a new release to promote, there was no shortage of material for Bettye to choose from this evening.  Her smile was addictive and as emotive as her voice at times, but that was the real tale of tonight’s show.  Whether she was performing older material or songs from her Dylan-tribute disc Things Have Changed, her vocal prowess took us all on a journey that spanned the decades and genres. Listening to her stories through the set added depth and appreciation to the songs, but let’s be honest – inside Detroit’s Jazz Cafe Sunday night, every note and word were getting the full attention and appreciation of the SOLD OUT crowd.  There are only a handful of dates on the West Coast left on this current tour, but if they are near you or more dates are added, don’t lose out – grab a ticket and see a true legend sing from deep within her heart and soul, drawing you into her world, if only for a couple hours.
