Book 2 in Justin Fisher’s series starts with the theft of all the gold in the world, the disappearance of Ned’s parents, and a greasy thief with a pet monster trying to do away with our titular thirteen year old hero, forcing him on the run with his best friend Lucy, his clockwork mouse and reluctant shadow.
Fisher’s universe is one of alternate realities, airships and amazing magical abilities, and his imagination has to be applauded. Comparing Ned’s saga to that of Harry Potter, however, is drawing somewhat too long a bow: Ned, Lucy, et al are just a little too thinly drawn for their story to be completely captivating.
Recommended for children from the age of ten, there are some complexities to the plot, so you would be recommended starting them with book one in the series first, but they will undoubtedly enjoy the adventurous and magical tales.
