10 Quick Ones with BeAsT of DEATH IN MOTION – June 2017

According to a recent press release: “Death in Motion (diM.) is the only efficient words to describe the atmosphere that develops around these 6 devious minds. From their dark beginnings in February of 2006, through multiple lineup shifts, and all the way to their undeniable present, diM. has showed unrelenting grit and drive towards their goals. diM. continues to show no weakness on their journey forward.” We get BeAsT to answer our 10 Quick Ones about the new disc, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our last album (lyrically) was all over the place. The concept however was pretty apparent in the skits. Each skit had a gem that was placed and derived from mainly a zombie apocalypse theme, and also an overall horror movie theme. The new cast skit was done a few times, and each time something new and silly was added. The name of it in general is an inside joke. We had these shirts that said diM., but had it going upwards on the rib cage. So everyone that didn’t know the band thought it said Wip. So we named the skit W.i.p news.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My brother was my main influence. He was/is a local DJ (DJ Day Won in Las Vegas). He was also in a band called Cornerstone. He would take me to all the local shows he was allowed to and take me to metal/rock shows all the time. Another big influence on me wanting to perform on stage was Aaron Lewis. He had a style vocally that I was drawn to and lyrics that hit home pretty hard.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

In no particular order: Aaron Lewis, Chino Moreno, Lajon Witherspoon,  Elias  Soriano, and Howard Jones.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Would love to do a song with Aaron Nordstrom from Gemini Syndrome.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Intense. I would say musically we portray our likeness on stage pretty solid. We are pretty all over the place and violent. I think we musically express that well.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Absolutely nothing. (laughs) I think being able to counsel yourself through hard times, and release a ton of negative feelings into your words, chords, or beats is the best therapy ever.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Literally that has never happened,  but for the sake of the question, hypothetically I see it working like this. Ashes: cooking, dude’s grilling skills are solid. Twitch: Grabbing drinks – just spend a day with him. Bastard: breaking out the guitar.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I am actually a pro wrestler as well, so no choosing… I’m greedy, so I’ll stick with both lol.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?  If so, please tell us about that.

Tons, I think our biggest misstep was not bringing in Bastard the initial time he came in to play with us. He was the best out of the choices,  and the voting over the 4 that were possible was a little one-sided. I think him being passed up then was a complete waste and we could have done so much more, so much sooner than we have, but that’s how the cards fell. He’s with us now, and the other guys are apart of this pretty easy going group are equally amazing. I can’t ask for a better team to work with.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would have loved to have been apart the Jimmy Hendrix recording experience. I have some ghost albums that never got released for purchase. The feeling behind those sessions exudes through and hits you.
