Sneakers DVD

Originally released in 1992 and starring Robert Redford and Sidney Poitier as Martin Bishop and Donald Crease, security and ex-agency experts running a team of hackers who specialise in exposing corporations security loopholes, Sneakers is ironic as it depicts a for-its-time forward thinking technological world, but in hindsight feels a bit dated and clunky.

The fault isn’t the tech used, and certainly not the performances: Redford and Poitier are reliable as ever, Dan Ackroyd plays geek well; River Phoenix shows charisma in one of his first major roles; Ben Kingsley plays a great over the top villain; and David Strathairn and Mary McDonnell provide solid support.

Director Phil Alden Robinson shoots ambitiously high in this story of cryptography, espionage and murder, but falls short, failing to replicate the writing/directing success of his 1989 Kevin Costner hit Field Of Dreams. What’s left is an entertaining enough story but the cracks where the viewer can see the gap between what he was trying to do, and what he actually ended up with, are pretty obvious, and at 2 hours and six minutes, the film is at least twenty minutes too long.
