Indie EP’s can go either way the minute you drop it into your CD player and hit go. Lucky for me, the new EP from KidsonFire went the right way. Opening track “Kids On Fire” kicks things off with attitude and fun – you have to dig a track that starts off with a kid declaring “We’re gonna fuck this mother fucker up.” Once the vocals from Karina join the guitar heavy intro, the song is off and running and this is a fun track to wrap your ears around sonically and lyrically. Be sure to listen all the way through, as we are treated to a cool little snippet of The Five Stairsteps “Ooh Child.” “Mother’s Little Monster” slows the tempo a bit thanks to a beautiful piano interlude that quickly gains steam and intensity thanks to the twin guitar attack from Ian and Scott. The vocals are rich and add depth to the track while the rhythm section keeps the tempo in check. “Anymore” is a straight ahead rocker that benefits from the heavy handed drums of Derek and more guitar leads that build slowly. Bassist Danny Smash tosses in some heavy pounding bass lines that help carry the tune into the verse and across the bridge. The song hits all of the marks and helps define the band’s sound. “Beautiful Suicide” brings a different guitar sound to the table and is highlighted by Danny’s bass lines through the verse. The chorus is catchy and drives the track between verses and takes us into a bridge full of riffs that help take this song to the next level and should translate perfectly in a live setting. I cannot wait to see what these guys do next – hopefully more tracks and a tour to support the material.
