TEN QUICK ONES with JOSH JOHNSTONE, VIDA CAIN
TEN QUICK ONES with JOSH JOHNSTONE, VIDA CAIN
By Shane Pinnegar
Perth melodic rock foursome VIDA CAIN released their excellent second album Yeah Nah [reviewed here] in October, and will be storming the barricades at Four 5 Nine Bar this Friday, 10 February, 2017, after a successful East Coast album tour.
Featuring superb support from The Shakeys and Second HAND Stroke, the band will be featuring tracks from Yeah Nah, which was produced by Eskimo Joe’s Joel Quartermaine. Don’t miss it!
1. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realised you wanted to be a musician?
I saw the Money For Nothin’ music video with their electric headbands, in particular the bit where Mark Knopfler jumps off some platform and starts playing the riff. I must have been 5 years old or something. I thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. At That point I didnt need money, or had no reason why you needed your chicks for free, but I wanted whatever that meant.
2. Who would be your main five musical influences?
For this band… Led Zep, The Kinks, QOTSA, Royal Blood, Kings of Leon… anything with riffs and melody
3. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
As a musician and all round fun dude, Dave Grohl. As a Producer, Rick Rubin
4. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
I would say it’s your favourite kind
5. What’s the best thing about being a muso?
Drinking on the job. We sure ain’t in it for the money!
6. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
JR (Drums) would cook, Myself and Mike (Guitar) would crack out the guitar for a singalong, Trav (Bass) would be at the casino loosing all of the band’s money!
7. If you weren’t a muso, what would be your dream job?
I work in the mental health field as a music therapist and as a youth worker. I love working in those fields, so I guess that would is my dream job, outside of musician
8. If you were made ruler of the world, what would your first orders be?
The first order would be some kind of cocktail, followed by something nice for lunch… I don’t know, Ive never given much thought to this kind of thing
9. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
I would love to have been around the Blood Sugar Sex Magic album sessions. I did see the Funky Monks video which documents those times, looks like a wild ride to the top. That album made me fall in love with groove based music that has hooky melody
10. What, for you, is the meaning of life??
Life is short and it can be taken away from you in a heartbeat. Do whatever makes you happy, so long as you do to others as you would have done to you.
