‘The Mark We Leave Behind’ is the forthcoming EP from Philadelphia’s The Escape, a four piece rock/puck band formed in 2010.  The EP is scheduled to drop on July 28, and is their first release since 2013’s ‘New Direction’ LP.  Reminiscent of punk heavyweights Rise Against with a bit less angst, ‘The Mark We Leave Behind’ provides a blend of heady thought provoking lyrics with roll-your-windows-down jams that is perfect for summertime cruising or hanging out at the beach.

Their publicity bio references the efforts The Escape puts into their writing, and the effort shows off.  Everything about the EP is tight.  The instrumentals compliment the vocals as much as the vocals compliment the instrumentals.  Nothing sticks out as being out of place, each song is neatly packaged as individual rock/punk anthems.  Yet all six tracks all fit together as well.  Singer Stephen Angello is quoted in the EP’s press release stating “Lyrically, we wanted to explore the concept of footprints.”  He goes on to say “Whether it’s the attitudes we adopt as a society, the impressions we make on others through our relationships, or the art we create, at heart is the question: “What is the mark we leave behind?”  This theme is explicitly stated in the opening track “Soon Forgotten”, which also serves as the first single and video from the album.

The Rise Against influence in unmistakable in “Soon Forgotten”, both in the sound of the band and in the challenging socially conscious lyrics.  The band quickly mixes things up with the second track, “What Happened To Us”, which is the most subdued track on the EP, with Angello’s lyrics wistfully looking back on a relationship gone wrong, wishing it could be turned right again.  The remaining four tracks return to the style of the opening song, closing strong with “Waiting”.

Fans of Rise Against, Bayside, or even The Offspring may dig The Escape and ‘The Mark We Leave Behind.’  Check out the video for “Soon Forgotten” and catch a glimpse of The Escape at their best.
