Gasoline Inc made a triumphant return to their hometown this week to showcase their latest EP – The Wanted One – and took the opportunity to introduce new guitarist Mick Haggerty, as well as invite an old friend on stage to join them.

After sweaty sets by openers Aztech Sons and Homebrewe – who especially have improved incrementally over the past year or so, and are now true contenders – the joint was jumping and a shoe horn couldn’t have crammed many more people through the door.

Gasoline Inc left town 18 or so months ago leaving not much more to prove in Perth, and a lot of the faithful wanted to see how they’d evolved during their time in Melbourne – and no-one was to leave disappointed, as they ran through a set full of old favourites and new tunes that put them a class above the rest.

Haggerty brings a new dimension to the Gasoline Inc sound – to use a Keith Richards term, his and Matt Soufolis’s playing weave together, melodies and layers are constructed. Who played this note or that one? Like The Stones at their best – who cares… it’s seamless.

Their songwriting and stage presence too have evolved. The Gasoline Inc before us tonight are less pub rock and less stagey – they’re more confident, more … more of a family, if that’s not too literary a notion to suggest. Put simply – Gasoline Inc 2012 sound like a band that have finally assembled all the pieces of the puzzle.

All the favourites were present – Nicotine & Love, Dynamite, The Dirty Three, The Quatrains and AFL-syndicated hit Superstar, as well as new stunners The Wanted One, Aurora, the haunting All That Remains, latest single Shock and Blessed, but perhaps the biggest cheer was reserved for when they pulled founding member Andro Mestrovich up to contribute some backing vocals.

Gasoline Inc sure know how to throw a homecoming party!
