Mad Max and Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior are sacred pieces of cult film brilliance. Beyond Thunderdome is a totally different story…

In 2015, 30 years after the Beyond Thunderdome debacle, we finally get another entry in the Mad Max franchise, and this is the shot in the arm that the current action movie genre needed. The entire movie is basically one frantic, masterfully shot and edited car chase through the desert landscape that is Fury Road.

Mel Gibson has been replaced by the very in demand, and talented, Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky for this entry, but Max isn’t the main character here. The movie belongs to the one armed Furiosa, played perfectly by Charlize Theron. She’s as tough as nails in a man’s world, and proves early on that she can hold her own against Max, and a rogue’s gallery of villains that chase her convoy down Fury Road.

George Miller might have spent the better part of the last two decades making Babe and Happy Feet movies, but he hasn’t forgotten how to craft an action adventure film at all. The Mad Max universe is obviously very close to his heart, and he has worked for many years, just to be sure that he does the franchise justice.

And done it justice he has. Fury Road is every bit the Mad Max movie that we love and remember, from the costumes to the vehicles to the scenery. The sound is phenomenal, the editing is second to none, the action sequences are brilliant. There is nothing about this movie that I didn’t enjoy!

The character of Max is only minor in Fury Road, but I like that. You have to remember that it’s been 30 years since Mad Max was last seen on our screens, so to re-introduce him to a new audience slowly is a pretty good move. Especially if they are to continue the story and take this into a new franchise, which I am sure is the plan.

I will definitely go along for the ride in any future entries.
