It’s the 22nd Century and magic rules with an iron fist. A group of soldiers, Trojan Wolf, are sent on a recovery mission: they must go into Olympia and recover a rare, important object. The mission is incredibly dangerous, and swarming into the city isn’t something they have done before. Tensions are high, lives are at stake.
For a short story of just over twenty pages (according to the copy on the iPad), Gavran weaves a story of magic and mystery incredibly well. It’s action-packed from beginning to end and constantly keeps you on your toes. It’s a fast, easy read, the reader is quickly sucked into the storyline and I, for one, am excited to find out more about these soldiers, the Trojan Wolf, and their missions. Gavran packed a lot of punches in so few pages — there’s magic, charms, warded weapons, super-fast, super-experienced killers and random twists and turns that will catch you off-guard.
The only downside to this short story was the very fact that it was so short. I wanted to know more; more about Trojan Wolf, more about Daya, the main character, just more in general. It read a lot like it was part of a novel, a scene from a full-length story, rather than a self-contained, complete short story.
Overall, a very good read and I look forward to reading more Trojan Wolf short stories.
