RL Crowfoot’s vocals are dark and bluesy, and full of gruff fervour on the latest platter from New South Wales psych rockers Buffalo Crows, evoking Jim Morrison one minute, Tom Waits the next, whilst the band lay down some of the grungiest heavy blues you’ll hear this side of the black stump.
Influences range from Aussie rock legends Rose Tattoo and Buffalo – whose Dune Messiah gets a reworking here – to the Desert Rock legions, Motorhead and Crazy Horse. Walk Through The Fire and the opening of A Million Years sound much like The Doors jamming on Planet Caravan in an Aussie pub, while Bastard Blues, Bone Throne, the climax of A Million Years and totally live up to the albums title of Primitive Grind.
Let’s not forget the great cover art courtesy of Chris Harrendence too, which interprets the band’s moniker quite literally to great effect.
