THEATRE REVIEW: The Cat In The Hat

The Cat In The Hat Live

Bringing Dr Seuss’ children’s favourite The Cat In The Hat to the stage was never going to be an easy task, such is the manic energy of the piece, first published in 1957.

As the titular character (James Satfford) rhymes his way through Sally (Kristy Griffin), her brother (Daniel Miles) & their voice-of-reason Fish (Warwick Reid)’s home while Mum is out on this rainy day, chaos is wrought and mess created – all in the name of entertaining the kids.

The producers have done a wonderful job with the piece, delivering a thoroughly engaging show which is a delight for all ages, featuring a minimalist set, imaginative props and a thoroughly charismatic performance from all involved.

An entertaining 40 minutes (the perfect length for a theatre full of young-uns) for the adults, the kids absolutely loved every anarchic minute, especially the hyperactive mayhem of The Cat’s acrobatic helpers, Thing 1 and Thing 2 (Amelia Homes and Shea Thomas).

While adults like myself were entertained and impressed, six year old Tia raved for the rest of the day about how much she loved the show, Thing 1 & 2 being her “absolute favourite, because they’re so crazy and funny!”

Cat In The Hat – Live On Stage runs through 29 January at Perth’s State Theatre Centre. For Tickets:
