Five Finger Death Punch’s fans have organized into a small army over the past couple years. Their catchy metal riffs combining the fine guitar work of Jason Hook and Zoltan Bathroy, anthem lyrics, and vocalist Ivan Moody’s genuine, in-your-face presentation make for a memorable experience. Coming off of this year’s Mayhem Festival they packed the Fillmore Detroit with fans that were more than willing to sing and participate when Moody called for them. The set was much different than last year’s Trespass America headlining slot. This time around the light show was even more blinding, while their back stage was draped in metal gargoyles. Aluminum structures with grenades, skulls, and bullet casings engulfed the massive DDrum kit that is played by their drummer Jeremy Spencer. Ivan still had his signature “bullet-skull” microphone stand front-and-center to add some familiarity to the set.

“Under and Over It” and “Burn It Down” opened their show. Moody dedicated “Bad Company” to the military service and added, “If you see one in the seats, shake their hand, buy them a drink, and thank them.” They also performed their latest single, “Lift Me Up” from their new album The Wrong Side of Heaven & the Righteous Side of Hell, Vol. 1. Ivan really knows how to work the crowd as well, as some of the crowd trickled in fresh with excitement from the Detroit Tigers playoff victory. “When I saw that we were playing Detroit during the playoffs; I just knew this was going to be one hell of a tour stop” said Moody.

I think that the fans appreciated seeing FFDP in a more intimate setting as opposed to outdoor amphitheaters. Escape the Fate and Miss May I opened the show with mixed emotions, but definitely kept the energy level high. It was quickly overshadowed however, by the soaring vocals of Moody and the spectacular show that was put on by all of FFDP. One of the rare characteristics of this band is that they are better live than on CD. If you ever have the opportunity to go see them in concert; you should because your inner rock star will be supremely satisfied.
